.fasta

This format was originally only used by Fasta software, but soom became very popular due to its simplicity. Nearly all software for sequence analysis can read and/or write sequences in fastA format, so that this format is very useful to exchange sequences between different packages. fastA format has first the name and the description of the sequence on one line starting with '>', and then the sequence itself on any number of lines. It is very suitable for transfer of sequence information.
